Installation Guide

Every Decortie product ships with its own step-by-step instruction sheet. This page covers the general advice that applies to all of our furniture so assembly goes smoothly and the finished piece stays safe and square for years.

Before you start

  • Open the box on a soft surface (rug, carpet or the flattened box) to avoid scratching the panels.
  • Check every part and fitting against the parts list in the instructions before you begin. Fittings are usually bagged and numbered.
  • Allow enough time and space. Sideboards, TV units and bookcases are easier and safer with two people; small tables and shelves are usually a one-person job.
  • Tools: most items need only a Phillips screwdriver and the Allen key supplied. A rubber mallet helps with wooden dowels; a cordless drill on low torque is fine for pilot holes but avoid using it to drive cam locks or confirmat screws.

During assembly

  • Follow the numbered steps in order and orient panels exactly as shown - pre-drilled holes only line up one way.
  • Do not overtighten. Stop as soon as the fitting is snug; MDF and chipboard panels can strip if screws are forced.
  • Tighten cam locks by turning clockwise until you feel resistance, then a further quarter turn.
  • Keep the unit square: before the final tightening, check the diagonals are equal and the doors or drawers sit evenly, then tighten everything.
  • Back panels are fixed with small nails or screws - fit them last, they hold the unit rigid.

Wall fixing and safety

Tall units (bookcases, tall shelving, wardrobes and anything over about 75 cm high) must be secured to the wall using the anti-tip bracket or strap supplied. This is essential in homes with children or pets. Wall-mounted shelves, floating TV units and wall hooks must be fixed with fixings suitable for your wall type (solid brick, block, plasterboard) - the fixings in the box are for solid walls unless stated otherwise. If in doubt, ask a competent tradesperson.

  • Check the stated maximum load for shelves and TV units and spread weight evenly.
  • Level the unit using the adjustable feet where fitted, especially on uneven or carpeted floors.
  • Do not stand on or climb furniture.

Care

  • Wipe clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents and prolonged contact with water - water damage is not covered by the warranty.
  • Use coasters and mats for hot or wet items and keep furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  • Re-check fittings once a year and tighten if needed.

Missing or damaged parts

If a part is missing, damaged or you are unsure about a step, do not force anything - contact us with your order number, the product name and the part number from the instruction sheet.
